This was done from a photograph. It was so back lit by blinding sunlight that I couldn't even look at it or photo it. So I took my polarized sunglasses ond put them in front of the camera lens. It turned out in these amber tones. I liked it. So I painted it. Plein Air painting in the fog has its challenges. It is exiting though as things come in and go out of the haze. The trick is not to chase them or you spend the whole day changing things. This morning was so warm and still there was a rare hazy light that we don't see very often here on the edge of the big pond. I wanted to play with the geometric shapes against the backdrop of the mountains. Mostly it was about the atmosphere. Much better then the winds of last week. <br />

I like those crazy nondescript sky's we get when the weather changes around here. Just after this I started on an involved home improvement project. Of course that is when the weather turned off fantastic with temps in the seventies. Now that the project is winding down we are back to the fog. Go figure.<br />

Driving back from Trinidad yesterday I spotted this scene and went there this morning to get the early light. I stood right on the edge of the highway with the cars blasting by.For the right scene I can ignore the noise. There are so many little gems that we pass all the time. I like finding them and bringing them to life.<br />

This is another small painting I did during the workshop. This is one of my favorite places. I can remember trout fishing here before the 1964-65 flood. I visited it just afterwards it was totally devastated. There was not a tree left and it was graveled in from bank to bank. I have been there every year since and watched it recover. It is now once again how I remember it.<br />

I left Hawk Canyon

short of finishing. I usually try to compete a painting in one pass.
Nature does not always comply. The next day at the time frame I wanted
we were slated to do the "Quick Draw" That is where we all paint within
a certain area and have two hours from start to finish to complete a
painting. and the all go on display that evening. So I had to wait a
whole day in between before I could finish. When I got out there
Thursday evening It was so *^##@&^% windy I drove my truck out and
parked sideways to the wind for cover I set up and a hurricane force
gust of wind came under the truck and nearly blew my legs out from under
me. And in the process blew sand and dirt all over the painting. I
would have been better served staying put and tossing a shovel full of
grit onto the painting. Threw my gear in the back of the truck and gave
up. I ended up getting up a predawn the next morning and finishing it.
The part I needed to finish was in shadow so it didn't make much
difference in the light.</span></span><br />

drove out to Hawks Canyon again because there was a bush in the
painting of the red rock outcropping that I didn't feel I got right.
Spent about an hour fixing it. On the way out I drove up an<span class="text_exposed_show">
old jeep road. Nice to have four wheel drive when you want it. I was
perched on the top of this ridge with the expanse of the desert
landscape before me. It stretched on as far as I could see to the east
out across Death Valley. An awesome feeling of desolation, loneliness
and solace washed over me with the warm desert wind. For some reason I
have always liked these kind of places. As far as painting goes this is
exactly the wrong place to try to paint. Bland colors no contrast and
weak foreground and any number of other inherent flaws. So why paint it
one might ask? Mostly just to see if I can. And I like the way being
there made me feel. Richard Shmidt said about plein Air painting "Even
if the painting fails one gets to commune with nature for a few hours."
The Title of this one is "The Middle of Nowhere."</span></span><br />
